Address: DW794 , 42-436 Smoleń
Currently in the form of ruins, but still having its charm, the castle stands on a high conical hill covered with forest. The building is located on the Trail of the Eagles 'Nests and the Jurassic Bicycle Trail of the Eagles' Nests. A wooded, cone-shaped hill with a characteristic castle tower on it was probably inhabited before our era. This is confirmed by archaeological excavations in the form of spear points. The knight's castle was erected in the Gothic style in the mid-fourteenth century, most likely by Otto from Pilcza of the Topór coat of arms and replaced the previously wooden watchtower. Initially, the outline of the castle was a small stone building with a high tower. Later, the building grew systematically by adding two lower locks. At the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries, the building was managed by Elżbieta Pilecka-Granowska, the third wife of Władysław Jagiełło. In the 16th century, Biernat from Lublin, who was the chaplain and private doctor and secretary of the castle master Jan Pilecki, stayed in the castle belonging to the Pilecki family. We know from Biernat's letters about the existence of a rich collection at the castle in Smoleń. In the 16th century, Padniewscy became the next owners, after the Pilecki family. The rich and powerful family needed a much more magnificent residence, therefore, soon the owners of Smoleń moved to Pilica, where they built a new castle. The abandoned stronghold in Smoleń suffered significantly during the Swedish invasion. It was planned to be used as a monastery, but this did not happen. In the mid-nineteenth century, the castle was bought and partly rebuilt by Roman Hubicki, who founded the well-known batow factory here.
