Lesser Poland is famous for cities with extraordinary charm and interesting history. Among them is Olkusz, once called the "silver city". Once it was one of the most important center of lead and silver mining in Poland. In the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries, Olkusz grew rapidly and was a very important economic center. Although in the later times the city lost some importance, today traces of its rich past can be seen at almost every step. What is worth seeing in Olkusz? Fragments of old defensive walls and an interesting market square have been preserved here. Many legends circulate about the undergrounds located under this market. Olkusz is also two interesting museums located in one building. This is the African Museum and an interesting wicker collection. The most valuable monument of religious architecture in Olkusz is the parish church of St. Andrew. This Gothic parish church was created in the first half of the fourteenth century and from the very beginning stood out with its impressive size. A valuable monument is located inside this church. This is a Gothic polyptych from 1485 made by Krakow masters.
