Cavemen Trail
18.03.2017
Jura has its secrets and places extremely attractive in terms of landscape. One of its attractions is the Wodąca Valley, considered one of the most interesting dry karst valleys throughout the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. This is where you can meet the cave man, and the addition to the most important archaeological sites is facilitated by the Caves' Trail. This route is only 10 kilometers long, but it is extremely attractive. It leads through forests and agricultural areas, and its biggest attractions are picturesque rocks and caves hidden in them. This trail can be overcome on foot, it can also be traversed by bike. It is best to start the journey at the castle in Smoleń, here you can also end it. Today, the Smoleń Castle is one of the most beautiful ruins in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. From here, it's close to the first important building on the Cavemen Trail, i.e. the Clock Rocks. These limestone rocks are distinguished by steep walls, whose height reaches up to 30 meters. A great attraction for active people are numerous climbing routes, and lovers of this sport can be found here practically all year round. Clock Rocks are the first of the important caves on the route. This is the Clock Cave, which has three entrances. Traces of human remains from 50-60 thousand years ago were found here. Later a Neolithic man and the people of Przeworsk culture visited here. It is known that man was also here in the early Middle Ages. The second cave in Clock Rocks is the Jasna Cave - a wide, through cavern, divided by a rock column into two parts. Another interesting place on the Cavemen Trail is Kyciowa Rock. This limestone monadnock resembles an elephant and looks beautiful in the surroundings of Jurassic fields. Another interesting rock on the route is the Jama Rock, which houses the Jasna Strzegowska Cave. Man had already visited it during the Paleolithic period, while archaeological research showed that there was a flint workshop here. Further on, the trail leads to the Black Forest, where there is a very important place. This is the source of Tarnówka. This small river is a tributary of the Biała Przemsza River, and its karst spring is a real attraction for nature lovers. Here, in the crystal clear water, an animal that is a relic of the ice age lives. This is a small alpine fern, which looks a bit like a leech. After a visit at the Tarnówka spring, the trail leads to the Wodąca Valley. This valley has a length of 5 kilometers, and in its surroundings there are many interesting inselbergs. About 60 karst caves have been detected in this small valley, most of which have been found to be hundreds of thousands of years old. One of the most interesting rocks here is Grodzisko Pańskie, on which rock there was a medieval stronghold. In the former stronghold there is an interesting cave, which in the 17th century served as an illegal mint. False coins were minted in it, as demonstrated by archaeological research carried out here. Another important point is the Biśnik rock, which also has an interesting cave. Numerous tools were found here that served man half a million years ago. Research continues here, and the Biśnik Cave still surprises scientists.
